Meelis Kull is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Tartu's Institute of Computer Science, leading the Chair of Data Science. He holds the position of Head of the Estonian Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence (EXAI), which unites 13 research teams focusing on trustworthy AI applications in areas like e-governance, healthcare, and cybersecurity. A graduate of the University of Tartu (PhD in Bioinformatics, 2011), he completed postdoctoral research in Machine Learning at the University of Bristol (2013–2017). His research emphasizes uncertainty modeling in AI, with 45+ publications, including 16 in the last five years. He oversees seven doctoral students and has mentored a postdoctoral researcher. Recognitions include the 2024 ECAI Outstanding Paper Award, 2014 ECML-PKDD Outstanding Paper Award, and 2019 Lecturer of the Year honor. He chairs the Machine Learning journal editorial board and served as co-chair of ECML-PKDD 2024.
Key projects include 'Contextual Uncertainty and Representation Learning in Machine Perception' (2022–2026) and 'Foundations of Secure Digital Solutions and AI' (2024–2028). His work bridges theoretical advancements in calibration, fairness, and robustness with real-world AI applications.
