Kalevi Kull is a Professor of Biosemiotics at the University of Tartu’s Institute of Philosophy and Semiotics, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. His career spans over four decades, with a focus on biosemiotics, theoretical semiotics, and philosophy of biology.
Education: PhD in Biology (1987) from the University of Tartu, specializing in dynamic modeling of tree growth. Earlier studies include a biology degree from the University of Tartu (1970–1975).
Research interests include biosemiotics, theoretical semiotics, and interdisciplinary connections between biology and environmental sciences. His work bridges philosophy, biology, and communication studies.
Administrative roles: President of the International Society for Biosemiotic Studies (since 2015), Editor-in-Chief of Sign Systems Studies (since 1998), and member of numerous editorial boards, including Semiotica and Journal of Biosemiotics.
Awards include the Akadeemia Gold Award (2019), National Science Prize (2002), and multiple honorary memberships in semiotic societies.
He has contributed to the J. v. Uexküll Center’s governance and served as President of the Estonian Naturalists’ Society (1991–1994). His research emphasizes theoretical frameworks linking biological processes to semiotic systems.
