Maxwell Schnurer

Dr. Maxwell Schnurer is a Professor and Chair of the Communication Department at California Polytechnic State University, Humboldt. He holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Women’s Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. His work focuses on social movements, anti-violence initiatives, restorative justice, digital communication, and rhetoric of science. He has led the Sexual Assault Prevention Committee for over 15 years, developing award-winning programs to combat sexualized violence. Dr. Schnurer pioneered the first 4-year Communication BA program at Pelican Bay State Prison, focusing on system-impacted students through curriculum development, policy advocacy, and partnerships with organizations like Project Rebound.

His teaching spans courses such as Social Advocacy, Digital Communication, and Gender and Communication. He has contributed extensively to campus initiatives on student success, policy, and equity. Notable recognition includes the 2019 California State University Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award with Dr. Kim Berry. Beyond academia, he is an artist, DJ, and creator of handmade electronic instruments.
