Janine Benedet, KC is a Professor of Law at the Peter A. Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia. She holds an LL.B. from UBC, an LL.M. and S.J.D. from the University of Michigan. Her academic roles include teaching criminal law, labour law, and legal ethics, with prior service as Associate Dean and interim Dean. Benedet is a member of the BC bar and engages in pro bono litigation on sexual violence cases.

Research Interests focus on legal responses to sexual violence against women, including barriers in the criminal justice system, Charter impacts on sexual assault law, and criminalization of sex buying/pimping. She co-edits the Criminal Reports and is affiliated with the Centre for Feminist Legal Studies.
Publications span over 40 articles, emphasizing sexual assault law, judicial misconduct, and disability rights in legal contexts. Recent work includes analysis of motive in sexual assault trials and reforms to Canada’s prostitution laws.
Awards include the 2024 Governor General’s Award for advancing gender equality. Benedet also contributes to policy debates on sex offender registries, sentencing reforms, and legal protections for vulnerable populations.
Her advocacy extends to pro bono representation for women’s equality groups and expert testimony on violence against women. She integrates this work into legal education, mentoring students in feminist and disability rights advocacy.
