Professor Mauro Perretti serves as Professor of Immunopharmacology and Deputy Director at The William Harvey Research Institute, Queen Mary University of London, within Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He has held his professorial chair since September 2001 and has been Deputy Director of the Institute since September 2006. His academic journey includes previous positions as Reader in Immunopharmacology and Senior Lecturer at the same institution.
Professor Perretti's research focuses on the investigation of endogenous mediators that actively promote resolution of inflammation for the regain of tissue homeostasis. His laboratory, comprising over 15 scientists, students, and visiting fellows, studies specific elements of the endogenous inflammatory response with a dual approach: determining the patho-physiological relevance of mediators in acute and chronic inflammation models, and identifying targets for innovative drug discovery. His work spans multiple systems including the Annexin A1 system, melanocortin peptide system, galectins, and glucocorticoids.
Analysis of his publication record reveals a consistent focus on inflammation resolution mechanisms, particularly the role of endogenous anti-inflammatory mediators. His research shows a progression from basic mechanisms of leukocyte migration to translational applications, with increasing emphasis on therapeutic development in recent years. His work bridges fundamental immunology with pharmacological applications, particularly in arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.
- Cattlin Prize (1998) - awarded as an 'Excellent Non-Clinical Scientist'
- Quintiles Prize (2000) - for 'Outstanding research in immunopharmacology'
- Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society (2004)
- Fellow of the Academia Europea (2010)
- Personal Chair at Queen Mary University of London (2001)
Professor Perretti has served on numerous editorial boards including the British Journal of Pharmacology and as Principal Editor of The Scientific World. His laboratory has secured significant research funding, including fellowships from the Arthritis Research Campaign, and has established commercial partnerships with Unigene Corp, Action Pharma A/S, and UCB. His work on the Annexin A1 system has resulted in two licensed patents. The MP laboratory employs a multinational team utilizing advanced techniques including intravital microscopy, genetically modified animals, and flow chamber assays to study leukocyte trafficking in various disease models ranging from arthritis to cystic fibrosis.
