Professor Maurizio Carbone is a Professor of International Relations and Development, and Jean Monnet Chair of EU External Policies at the University of Glasgow's School of Social and Political Sciences. He has taught at institutions including the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and the College of Europe (Natolin), and held visiting research positions at the University of Cambridge, Sciences Po, and others. His research focuses on EU development policy, EU-Africa relations, foreign policy, and sustainable development goals.
Key research interests include the European Union's external policies, trade and development linkages, North-South relations, and civil society engagement in development. He has authored or edited over 90 publications, including books like The European Union and International Development: The Politics of Foreign Aid (2007) and The Europeanisation of Development Policy (2017). He is the founding editor of Contemporary Italian Politics.
Professor Carbone has secured significant grants, including multiple Jean Monnet Programme awards (€60k, 2019-2021; €50k, 2017-2020) and a £35k Glasgow City Council award for hosting the 2014 ECPR General Conference. His work emphasizes policy coherence, aid effectiveness, and the evolving EU-Africa partnership.
Awarded the Abilitazione as Professore Ordinario (Full Professor) by Italy’s National Agency in 2013, he contributes to global debates on international development, multilateral negotiations, and geopolitical shifts impacting EU external relations.
