Dr Matthieu Burnay is a Reader in Global Law at Queen Mary University of London and Dean for International in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. He also holds visiting professorships at the University of Bologna and Beijing Normal University. His research focuses on global law and governance, EU-China relations, and comparative rule of law in Europe and Asia. Burnay is Co-Director of the Centre for European and International Legal Affairs (CEILA) and Academic Lead for the Double Degree in English and French Law.
Education: LLB and BA (Saint Louis-Brussels), MSc (Peking University), MSc (LSE), PhD (Leuven), FHEA.
Research Interests: EU-China legal cooperation, rule of law in authoritarian systems, human rights implications of extradition treaties, and China's global governance strategies. He leads the Jean Monnet Network EUPLANT and contributes to the EUCROSS project on global order challenges.
Teaching: Courses include 'Law and Globalisation', 'Global Law and Governance', and 'Chinese Law and Institutions'.
Grants & Awards: GCRF Networking Grant (2023), Jean Monnet Network Award (2018), Scientific Prize Gustave Boël (2014).
Public Engagement: Advisor to EU institutions, UK Cabinet Office, and Belgian Ministry of Justice. Academic coordinator for the Civil Service China Capability Training Course.
