- Academic Rank: Professor
- Active Research Leadership: Jean Monnet Chair (since 2021)
His research centers on European and International Trade Law, with a focus on foreign trade, investment protection, WTO law, public procurement, state aid, and international raw materials law. He is particularly engaged in reforming investor-state dispute settlement through the design of a Multilateral Investment Court (MIC), advocating for transparency, rule of law, and enforceability in international investment governance.
The Draft Statute of the Multilateral Investment Court, co-authored with August Reinisch, represents a major scholarly contribution, proposing a treaty-based international organization with a two-tier judicial structure, a secretariat, and enforcement mechanisms. This work reflects a consistent trend in his research: strengthening legal accountability and institutional legitimacy in global economic law.
His scientific recognition includes two Jean Monnet Chairs awarded by the European Commission, highlighting excellence in EU-focused research and education. These chairs support public outreach, workshops, conferences, and publications aimed at promoting the EU’s rule-of-law values in international dispute resolution.
