Matthew VanDyke is an Associate Professor in the Department of Advertising & Public Relations at the University of Alabama. He serves as Faculty Lead for the Alabama Science Communication Initiative, Senior Fellow with the Office for Research & Economic Development, and Faculty Fellow with the Global Water Security Center/Alabama Water Institute. His research focuses on science communication, environmental risk communication, and public engagement strategies in science contexts.
VanDyke holds a Ph.D. in Media and Communication from Texas Tech University, and M.A. and B.A. degrees in Communication from Virginia Tech. His work integrates public relations, science communication, environmental communication, and media psychology theories to address challenges in science and environmental risk communication.
Key research interests include issues management in science, communication strategies affecting public perceptions of science and environmental risks, and the role of media psychology in shaping attitudes toward water security, genetic testing, and climate change. He explores how organizations can improve public engagement through dialogic communication practices and evidence-based messaging.
VanDyke’s recent work examines flood risk simulation models, social media discourse on environmental conflicts, and the ethical dimensions of corporate greenwashing. He collaborates with interdisciplinary teams on projects involving water security, STEM education innovation, and public health communication.
His grants and projects emphasize actionable insights for policy makers and practitioners in environmental risk management and science communication. VanDyke advises students interested in pursuing research at the intersection of communication, science, and public policy.
