Matthew Niess is Associate Professor of Trombone and Director of Jazz & Commercial Music at Shenandoah University's Conservatory. A Doctor of Musical Arts graduate from Catholic University of America, Niess served for 30 years as lead trombonist with The U.S. Army Blues Jazz Ensemble and U.S. Army Brass Quintet.
He founded The National Jazz Workshop in 2008, directing its honor ensemble that performs at major venues including the Kennedy Center. As founder of The Capitol Bones jazz trombone ensemble, he received the International Trombone Association's Kai Winding Award. His performance career includes collaborations with Ray Charles, Frankie Valli, Kurt Elling, and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.
Niess has taught at George Mason, Towson and West Chester Universities, and guest lectured at institutions worldwide including University of North Texas, Juilliard, and international jazz festivals.
