Matthew Hall is an Associate Professor of Literacy in the Department of Special Education, Language, and Literacy at The College of New Jersey's School of Education. He holds a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning from New York University (2013), an M.Ed. in Special Education, and a B.S. in Education for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing from TCNJ. With certifications in General Education, Special Education, Deaf Education, and Reading, his career spans roles as a public school teacher, literacy coach, and professor.
His research examines digital literacy practices, including how youth engage with multimodal texts, writer-audience dynamics in networked spaces, and pedagogical integration of digital tools. Key research areas include:
- Digital literacies and multimodal composition
- Networked writing communities
- Youth agency in online spaces
- Arts-based research methodologies
His publications (2016-2024) predominantly explore digital literacy, networked writing, and educational equity, with frequent use of qualitative methods, data visualization, and arts-based analysis. Awards include the TCNJ School of Education Outstanding Faculty Member Award for Excellence in Teaching (2016). He directs the TCNJ Literacy Advancement Project and Assistive Technology Center, and has secured grants including a $549,913 NSF award for research on networked writing communities.
