Hannah Dostal is Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. She directs research on literacy development for deaf and hard-of-hearing students and leads the graduate certificate program in Literacy and Deaf Education.
Research Focus: Develops evidence-based frameworks like Strategic and Interactive Writing Instruction (SIWI) for deaf learners. Examines how genre-based pedagogy supports disciplinary knowledge development and multimodal communication. Current projects include sustainable literacy programs in Jamaica and ASL education initiatives.
Educational Leadership: Created graduate certificates in Literacy and Deaf Education and ASL Education to address critical teacher shortages. Teaches literacy assessment and methodology courses informed by classroom experience.
Partnerships: Collaborates with Jamaican Association for the Deaf to develop culturally responsive literacy models and study-abroad programs connecting UConn students with Jamaican deaf communities.
