Beverly Trezek is an Associate Professor and Tashia F. Morgridge Chair in Reading at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education, within the School of Education. She holds a Ph.D. and M.Ed. from UW-Madison. Her research focuses on literacy development for deaf/hard-of-hearing students, emphasizing evidence-based interventions and bilingual education. Prior to joining UW-Madison in 2019, she was a Professor at DePaul University (2005–2019) and an Assistant Professor at Ohio State University (2004–2005).
Dr. Trezek has extensive teaching experience in special education, including over a decade in the Madison Metropolitan School District. Her work bridges theory and practice, addressing gaps in literacy outcomes for deaf learners. She has authored/co-authored numerous books and articles, including Early Literacy Development in Deaf Children (Oxford, 2015) and influential journal papers on phonological awareness and cochlear implant impacts on literacy.
Her awards include the Excellence in Research Award (DePaul, 2017) and Hall of Fame Inductee (Illinois State University, 2013). She has presented globally on topics like bilingual education for deaf learners and evidence-based practices in literacy instruction. Her research emphasizes the role of phonology, alphabetic principles, and multimodal strategies in improving reading outcomes for marginalized student populations.
