Dr Matthew Evans is an Associate Professor in Law at the School of Law, Politics and Sociology, University of Sussex, and Co-Director of the Sussex Centre for Human Rights Research. He previously held a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of the Witwatersrand and remains a Visiting Researcher there.
- Research Focus: Human rights (particularly socioeconomic rights), transitional justice, transformative justice, social movements, advocacy networks, and South Africa.
- Teaching: Offers interdisciplinary instruction in law, politics, and sociology, including courses on public law, human rights, and socioeconomic rights.
- Publications: Authored and edited works such as Transformative Justice: Remedying Human Rights Violations Beyond Transition (2018), Transitional and Transformative Justice: Critical and International Perspectives (2019), and Beyond Transitional Justice: Transformative Justice and the State of the Field (or Non-Field) (2022).
- Academic Leadership: Involved in editorial roles for LaPSe of Reason and the Open Library of Humanities, and resigned from the UKRI Talent Peer Review College in protest (2023).
