Dr Matthew Caley is a Lecturer in Cell Biology at the Centre for Cell Biology and Cutaneous Research within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London. His research focuses on basement membrane zone (BMZ) dynamics in skin homeostasis and cancer, particularly investigating laminin 332's role in tissue repair, cholesterol transport, and tumour microenvironment regulation.
- PhD in Biological Sciences (2008) from Cardiff University
- Postdoctoral research at Imperial College London (prostate cancer metastasis)
- Joined Blizard Institute in 2011 for skin research
Research interests center on:
- Basement membrane structure/function in epithelial tissues
- Laminin 332 degradation mechanisms (MT1-MMP, MMP2, BMP-1)
- Integrin receptor signaling (ɑ3β1, ɑ6β4)
- Cholesterol transport defects in Junctional Epidermolysis Bullosa (JEB)
- Tumour microenvironment regulation in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
Recent publications highlight his work on:
- Therapeutic targets for genetic skin disorders
- ECM remodeling in cancer metastasis
- Collagen and laminin interactions in tumour progression
- LOX enzyme's role in bone metastasis
Matthew teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate programs including:
- BIO111 Cell Biology
- BIO115 The Human Cell
- MSc Regenerative Medicine modules
