Dr. Matt Wale is a Lecturer in Ecology and Environmental Management at Edinburgh Napier University’s School of Applied Sciences, affiliated with the Centre for Conservation and Restoration Science. He earned his PhD from Edinburgh Napier (supervised by Prof Karen Diele and Dr Rob Briers) and an MSc from the University of Bristol.
His research focuses on anthropogenic noise impacts on marine and freshwater invertebrates, spanning behavioral, physiological, biochemical, and genetic responses. He advocates for multimethod, interdisciplinary research to assess cumulative effects of noise alongside other stressors (e.g., temperature, chemical pollutants) at individual and ecosystem levels.
Recent publications emphasize noise effects on decapod crustaceans, bivalve molluscs, and stressor interactions. Selected works explore ecotoxicology, larval microbiomes, and robotics in ecological surveying. His 2021 article in Marine Pollution Bulletin outlines methodological trends in anthropogenic noise research.
- Scientific Awards: MAST Travel Grant (2018–2019).
Dr. Wale supervises Jess Lister’s PhD on acoustic pollution and freshwater soundscapes. He collaborates on the Microlanding project (funded by KAUST, 2019–2022) and has secured grants for travel and research.
