Dr Lucy Turner is a Lecturer in Marine Biology at the University of Plymouth, affiliated with the School of Biological and Marine Sciences (Faculty of Science and Engineering). Her work bridges ecophysiological research with social science frameworks to address global change impacts on marine systems. She holds a PhD from the University of Bristol (2010), an MRes from Plymouth (2005), and a BSc from the University of Wales, Swansea (2003).
Her research focuses on understanding organismal responses to environmental stressors like climate change, using integrative approaches spanning molecular biology, 'omics technologies, and interdisciplinary methods. Key areas include crustacean physiology, sustainable aquaculture, and ecosystem resilience. She teaches modules such as Conservation Physiology, Experimental Marine Biology, and Ecophysiology of Marine Animals, emphasizing sustainability education.
Recent work explores metabolic adaptations in tropical freshwater crabs, climate change effects on crustacean performance, and the socio-ecological viability of mud crab aquaculture. Collaborations with social scientists highlight her commitment to actionable solutions for marine sustainability.
Lucy supervises multiple PhD and ResM students, including studies on crab ecophysiology, climate resilience in marine species, and sustainable fisheries practices. Her postdoctoral mentorship has supported projects on crab transport logistics and freshwater crab resource use in India.
Her teaching philosophy integrates fieldwork and laboratory techniques, fostering student engagement with real-world environmental challenges. She co-authored influential work on sustainability pedagogy, emphasizing the role of hidden curricula in higher education.
Lucy’s research extends to coastal ecosystems, toxin dynamics in bivalves, and the physiological impacts of hypoxia and ocean acidification. Her interdisciplinary approach ensures findings inform both scientific and policy communities.
