Matt Butler is a Wellcome Doctoral Clinical Research Fellow and specialist registrar in psychiatry at King’s College London. He is affiliated with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and the Department of Psychosis Studies. His research focuses on neuropsychiatry, functional neurological disorder (FND), psychopharmacology, and psychedelic treatments. He leads the Neuroimaging in FND study and contributes to the Psychoactive Trials Group.
Education: MBChB (Hons) and MRes (Distinction) from the University of Manchester. He is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and editor of the upcoming Pocket Prescriber Psychiatry.
Research interests include neuroimaging of psychedelic effects (e.g., psilocybin), FND pathophysiology, and placebo/expectancy effects in clinical trials. His work bridges clinical practice and academic research, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration.
Notable affiliations include the Neuropsychiatry Research & Education Group (NREG) and involvement in high-impact studies on FND, post-COVID neuropsychiatric outcomes, and psychedelic therapeutics.
