Deepak Cyril Dsouza is a Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine and a staff psychiatrist at VA Connecticut Healthcare System. With over 30 years of experience, he specializes in schizophrenia neuropharmacology, cannabis research, and psychedelic therapeutics. He leads the Schizophrenia Neuropharmacology Research Group at Yale (SNRGY) and directs the Neurobiological Studies Unit, focusing on experimental psychopharmacology and neuroimaging studies. His research explores cannabinoid effects on psychosis, synaptic biology in schizophrenia, and novel treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders using psychedelics like psilocybin.
Education: MBBS from St. John’s Medical College (1986), MD from SUNY Downstate (1992), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale. He mentors junior faculty and runs the VA Schizophrenia Research Fellowship program.
Research interests include cannabinoid-induced psychosis, psychedelic compounds for depression/migraine, and synaptic density imaging. He chairs VA Connecticut’s Research and Development Committee and serves on editorial boards (e.g., Psychopharmacology). Public outreach includes advising Connecticut’s Medical Marijuana Program.
Awards include the Yale Psychiatry Resident Teaching Award (2008). His work spans 250+ publications in top journals like Lancet Psychiatry and Biological Psychiatry.
