Mats Jönsson is a full Professor in Film Studies at the University of Gothenburg, where he has been since 2015. His research focuses on archive-driven media history, examining visual media's role in cultural, social, and organizational contexts. He previously served as Associate Professor at Gothenburg (2015), Assistant Professor at Örebro University (2005–2011), and Research Assistant at Lund University (2006–2010), where he earned his PhD in 2004.
- Key collaborations include National Library of Sweden, Swedish Film Institute, and SVT AB
- Founded GPS400 Centre (2019) for collaborative visual research across 4 faculties
- Co-edited book series Mediehistoriskt arkiv and international publications like Palgrave MacMillan's Researching Newsreels
His research spans newsreels, amateur film, educational media, and political cinema, with particular emphasis on local contexts, media materiality, and ethical-aesthetic dimensions. Recent projects focus on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) partnerships and international networks like The Newsreel Network and NAMCIE. Publications include 3 monographs, 9 anthologies, and contributions to journals, PDFs, and exhibitions at Hasselblad Center.
