Mary T. Boatwright is Professor Emerita of Classical Studies at Duke University, affiliated with Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. She specializes in Roman history, particularly the social and political history of the Roman Empire, Roman women, and urban topography. Her research explores imperial women’s roles, Roman frontiers, and historiography.
Education: PhD in Classical Studies (University of Michigan, 1980), MA (University of Michigan, 1975), BA (Stanford University, 1973).
Research focuses on imperial women’s agency, Roman urbanism, and frontier studies. Recent publications include The Imperial Women of Rome: Power, Gender, Example, Context (2021) and articles on Agrippina the Younger and Roman population transfers.
Professional activities include leadership roles in the American Philological Association and AAR Advisory Council, organizing conferences, and delivering lectures globally on topics like Roman architecture and imperial women.
