Gregory S. Bucher is a Principal Lecturer in the Department of Classics at the University of Maryland, College Park. Previously, he served as Professor of Classical and Near Eastern Studies at Creighton University (2001–2016). His academic career includes fellowships at the American Academy in Rome (1993–96) and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens (1994–95), as well as a Mellon Professorship at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome (2011–12). He holds a Ph.D. in Classics from Brown University (1997).
Bucher’s research focuses on Roman historiography, art history, and funerary culture, with notable work on Appian of Alexandria and Roman imperial portraiture. He has collaborated extensively with students, mentoring an undergraduate research group at Creighton and co-organizing grant-winning initiatives such as the 'Good, Bad, and Altered' symposium and the CU@Joslyn lecture series. His interdisciplinary work bridges classical studies with medical history, architectural analysis, and film studies.
His publications include critical essays on Appian’s historiography, studies on Roman topography, and collaborations with biomedical researchers on ancient anatomical knowledge. He has also contributed to exhibitions, including the touring catalog for An Archaeologist's Eye: The Parthenon Drawings of Kathryn A. Schwab. Bucher’s teaching spans Roman law, topography, and early Christian art, emphasizing immersive learning through study abroad programs and public lectures.
