Katherine Welch is an Associate Professor of Fine Arts and Deputy Director of Excavations at Aphrodisias (Turkey) at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts. She holds affiliated roles with NYU’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World and Classics Department. Her academic journey includes a PhD from NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts, an MA from the same institution, and a BA in Classics from Cornell University. She has also held visiting professorships at the University of Graz and served on numerous editorial and advisory boards, including the American Journal of Archaeology and the American Academy in Rome.
Her research focuses on ancient Mediterranean art and archaeology, specializing in Roman architecture, sculpture, and urban topography, particularly in Italy, Turkey, Greece, and Spain. She teaches courses on Roman art, archaeology of Aphrodisias, and ancient spectacle spaces. Welch has conducted extensive archaeological fieldwork at Aphrodisias since 1991, contributing to excavations and architectural studies. She has authored influential books like The Roman Amphitheater from its Origins to the Colosseum and edited volumes on Roman war representations and visual histories of the classical world.
Her awards include the Rome Prize Fellowship and research fellowships from the American Philosophical Society and American Academy in Rome. Welch’s articles span topics from Roman basilica origins to Pompeian portraiture, reflecting her expertise in ancient urbanism and artistic expression. She advises students on archaeological projects and actively participates in professional committees shaping academic standards and heritage preservation.
