Roland R.R. Smith is Professor in the Department of Archaeology at Bilkent University and Director of the Aphrodisias excavations. A leading scholar of classical art and archaeology, Smith received the prestigious TÜBA (Turkish Academy of Sciences) International Academy Award in Social Sciences and Humanities, recognizing his outstanding contributions to archaeological research.
Smith directs ongoing archaeological investigations at Aphrodisias, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Turkey renowned for its exceptional preservation of Roman architecture and sculpture. His research focuses on classical sculpture production, urban development in the Roman period, and the cultural dynamics of ancient Anatolia. As excavation director, he mentors students and coordinates international research teams at this significant archaeological site.
