Timothy C. Hart is a Lecturer of History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in the social history of ancient Roman borderlands. He focuses on the intersection of environmental, ideological, and political dynamics in imperial frontiers, particularly along the Danube River. His research explores Roman perceptions of 'barbarian' neighbors and the comparative relevance of ancient border issues to modern contexts. He is completing a book, Beyond the River, Under the Eye of Rome, examining Greek ethnographic influences on Roman frontier policies.
Dr. Hart teaches courses on ancient Mediterranean history, Roman historiography, classical archaeology, and the reception of antiquity in contemporary society. His teaching emphasizes critical engagement with topics like museum ethics and the political appropriation of classical heritage.
