Cedrik Michel is a Lecturer in Late Roman / Medieval History (with Latin) at the School of Global Affairs, Lancaster University. His research focuses on portrayals of the Roman Empire’s 'barbarian' neighbors in Late Antiquity through Ancient Greek, Latin, and visual sources, with expertise in ethnic markers, Arianism, and tattooing practices in antiquity.
Michel’s academic career has spanned departments at Université de Montréal, University of Cambridge, Durham University, and currently Lancaster University. His work explores intersections of rhetoric, historicity, and cultural identity, including the application of video games as immersive tools for teaching ancient and medieval history.
His recent publications (2024) examine late antique perspectives on 'barbarian' identities and analyze classical panegyrics. Future research aims to expand into Central Asian history (200-700 CE), particularly Sasanian Empire dynamics and Scythian cultural interactions.
