Martin Köttering is the President of the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HFBK) and holds the academic rank of Professor of Education in Art. He studied Cultural Sciences and Aesthetic Practice at Universität Hildesheim, and Fine Art in Bath, UK. His career includes roles as artistic director of documenta 9, head of the Städtische Galerie in Nordhorn, and founder of the kunstwegen open museum. He has curated numerous exhibitions featuring international artists such as Olafur Eliasson and Katharina Grosse.
His research interests focus on exhibition design, public art interventions, and cultural policy. Notable projects include the Koppelschleuse youth cultural guest house and the subvision.kunst.festival.off in Hamburg’s HafenCity. Köttering is a member of multiple arts councils, including the Hamburg Media School and ACQUIN accreditation institute.
Publications include works on Dan Graham, Franz Erhard Walther, and Olav Christopher Jenssen, emphasizing installation art, public space strategies, and collaborative curatorial practices. His career spans over three decades, blending academic leadership with artistic and curatorial innovation.
