Nora Sternfeld is a Professor of Art Education at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HFBK Hamburg), where she also co-directs the /ecm Master Course for Exhibition Theory and Practice. She holds a distinguished career with previous roles as documenta professor at Kunsthochschule Kassel (2018–2020) and Professor of Curating and Mediating Art at Aalto University Helsinki (2012–2018). Her work bridges art, education, and activism, focusing on anti-racism, decolonial critique, and radical pedagogy.
She co-founded trafo.K, an office for education and critical knowledge production, and is part of freethought, a research platform. Sternfeld’s research explores exhibition practices, public space, and museums as sites of political resistance. Notable projects include organizing the Bergen Assembly 2016 and leading the Wartenau Assemblies, a format merging art, education, and activism.
Her awards include the BAK Fellowship (2020). She actively contributes to curatorial discourse through publications like Das Museum der Zukunft (2020) and After Europe: Beiträge zur dekolonialen Kritik (2021). Sternfeld’s work emphasizes critical engagement with institutional structures, advocating for inclusive and decolonized cultural practices.
