Martha Councell-Vargas

Martha Councell-Vargas is a Professor of Flute at the Irving S. Gilmore School of Music, Western Michigan University. She specializes in Latin American and Caribbean music, with notable research on Cuban flute traditions and the works of Paquito D’Rivera. Her career spans solo and chamber performances across 5 continents, including engagements in Europe, Asia, and South America.

Her research combines performance practice with cultural studies, highlighted by a 2011 grant-funded exploration of Cuban flute heritage. Teaching focuses on pedagogical innovation in flute instruction, with recent activities including a guest teaching residency at Colombia’s Conservatorio Nacional. Her scholarly work has been published in the Flutist Quarterly, and she maintains active collaborations with festivals across the Americas.
