Marta Hargitai serves as Assistant Professor at Eötvös Loránd University's School of English and American Studies in Budapest, Hungary, within the Department of English Studies. She is also affiliated with the Koraújkori Modern Angol Irodalom Kutatócsoport (Early Modern English Literature Research Group).
Dr. Hargitai earned her BA in Hungarian and English language and literature from the Teacher Training College at ELTE, followed by her MA and PhD in English at the Faculty of Arts at ELTE, with her doctoral dissertation focusing on 'Metamorphosis in Shakespeare's King Lear'.
Her research centers on Renaissance drama with particular emphasis on Shakespearean works, especially Macbeth and King Lear, and their film adaptations. She explores philosophical, theological, and spatial dimensions within these texts, examining concepts like time, space, evil representation, nostalgia, and belief systems. Her work frequently analyzes how cinematic adaptations interpret and transform these literary elements.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on Macbeth adaptations across different directors (Goold, Kurzel, Coen), with particular attention to spatial representations of evil, the concept of time, and the representation of hell. She also maintains significant scholarly interest in Doctor Faustus, examining belief systems and existential questions within Marlowe's work.
As an educator, Dr. Hargitai teaches courses in Medieval and Renaissance Literature, English drama, Shakespeare on film, Magic and Witchcraft in the Renaissance, and various Shakespearean studies courses at both BA/MA levels. She also supervises student research in Renaissance literature and film adaptations.
She has organized academic events including 'The Reel Eye' International Film Workshop and Conference at ELTE in 2021 and participated in numerous conferences including the European Shakespeare Research Association Conference in 2023 and the II Circe Online Conference in 2024.
