Dr. Marguerite A. Tassi is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where she has been a faculty member since 1997. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, she previously taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Dramatic Literature at Middlebury College. Professor Tassi's scholarly work focuses on Shakespeare, early modern drama, aesthetics, ethics, and the relationship between visual culture and verbal texts.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate School (1993), an M.A. from The University of Virginia (1989), and a B.A. from Columbia University (1987).
Professor Tassi's research centers on Shakespearean studies with particular emphasis on revenge literature, gender dynamics in early modern drama, and the intersection of visual arts with literary texts. Her work explores how visual representation interacts with dramatic narratives, especially in Shakespeare's plays. She has developed specialized courses on Women and Revenge in Western Literature and has made significant contributions to understanding the representation of queens, maternal figures, and avenging daughters in Renaissance drama. Her scholarship reveals a consistent interest in how classical myths, particularly those concerning female figures like Hecuba, are adapted and transformed in early modern English literature.
Analysis of her recent publications shows a clear trajectory from classical reception studies through Shakespearean gender analysis toward more philosophical explorations of Shakespeare's works. While maintaining her focus on Shakespeare, particularly Macbeth and King Lear, her research has evolved to incorporate Buddhist philosophy and pedagogical approaches to teaching Shakespeare. Her work consistently examines themes of violence, revenge, and representation across different cultural and historical contexts.
