Dr. Marlene Tromp is the 28th President of the University of Vermont and a Professor of English. Previously, she served as President of Boise State University, Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Dean and Vice Provost at Arizona State University, named the most innovative university in the U.S. for ten consecutive years. She has held national leadership roles on boards such as the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities and the American Council on Education, and represented higher education at the G7 Summit.
- Ph.D. in English from the University of Florida
- M.A. in English from the University of Wyoming
- B.A. in English from Creighton University
Her research focuses on Victorian literature and culture, particularly its relevance to contemporary cultural dynamics. She has authored multiple books and articles in this field and has led initiatives connecting academia with industry, nonprofits, and rural communities to enhance educational access and societal impact.
Scientific and leadership honors include:
- Presidency of the North American Victorian Studies Association
- Service on the U.S. Council on Competitiveness
- Leadership at nationally recognized institutions
Her initiatives include creating endowed scholarships to reduce financial barriers for students, launching the Community Impact Program and Hometown Challenge to expand access to higher education, and fostering partnerships to advance research and community engagement.
