Paul Schacht is a Professor of English at the State University of New York at Geneseo, affiliated with the Department of English and Creative Writing. He has been a faculty member since 1985 and holds leadership roles as Director of Geneseo's Center for Digital Learning (CDL) and Director of Digital Thoreau, a collaborative project focused on Henry David Thoreau's works. His research interests span Victorian literature, Digital Humanities, and the integration of technology in humanities education.
Education: Earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University. He teaches courses in Victorian literature and Digital Humanities. He is the principal author of the CDL's open-access resource Critical Digital Practices.
Research & Awards: Received two Chancellor’s Awards—Excellence in Teaching (1997) and Excellence in Faculty Service (2007). Coordinates the annual Walter Harding Lecture, featuring prominent speakers like Robin Wall Kimmerer and Bill McKibben. Served as Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs (2016–17).
Labs/Teams: Leads the Center for Digital Learning and the Digital Thoreau initiative, collaborating with the Thoreau Society and Walden Woods Project to promote scholarly engagement with Thoreau's legacy.
