Professor Markus Leweke is Chair in Youth Depression Studies at the University of Sydney's Brain and Mind Centre, part of the Central Clinical School. He holds a dual affiliation with the Charles Perkins Centre and the Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation. Previously, he served as a full professor and associate medical director at Heidelberg University's Central Institute of Mental Health. His research focuses on translational neuroscience investigating the endocannabinoid system's role in severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, employing clinical trials and animal models. Key areas include cannabinoid-based therapies, neuromodulation, and biomarker development for early intervention in youth mental health.
Education: MD from the University of Cologne and additional training at UNSW Sydney. Clinical expertise spans neurology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy with specialization in addiction disorders and neuropsychopharmacology.
Research interests emphasize cannabinoid pharmacology, psychiatric neurochemistry, and molecular imaging to uncover mechanisms for novel treatments. His work bridges basic science to clinical applications, including protocols like the Youth Mental Health Tracker longitudinal cohort study.
Publications span over 20 years, focusing on endocannabinoid signaling, cannabidiol's therapeutic potential, and schizophrenia pathophysiology. Current projects include clinical trials evaluating cannabidiol's cognitive benefits and biomarker-driven personalized psychiatry approaches.
