Professor Anthony Harris is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Sydney's Sydney Medical School, affiliated with the Westmead Clinical School and the Westmead Institute for Medical Research. He serves as Clinical Director of the Brain Dynamics Centre and Consultant Psychiatrist at the Prevention Early Intervention and Recovery Service (PEIRS), Western Sydney Local Health District. His clinical expertise focuses on early intervention in psychosis and severe mental illness.
Education: MBBS, FRANZCP, PhD. Research interests include psychophysiology, neuroimaging of schizophrenia and mood disorders, cognitive remediation therapy, and the electrophysiological mechanisms of auditory hallucinations. Current projects explore brain imaging markers for mental illness prognosis, wearable e-health devices for youth mental health (UNWIRED project), and the electrophysiological signature of inner speech.
Key research contributions include the Farrow et al study on structural MRI differences between bipolar and schizophrenic disorders, and longitudinal neuroimaging studies in schizophrenia. He leads educational initiatives on anxiety and mood disorders for healthcare professionals and chairs the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW Research Trust Fund.
Awarded the J.A. Young Award, his work bridges clinical practice and neuroscience, with over 200 publications across psychiatry, neuroscience, and clinical trials. His team investigates treatments combining cognitive therapy with supported employment and uses EEG/ERP to study inner speech in psychosis. Current student: Loretta Duffy.
