معرفی
Dr Timothy Couttas is a Research Fellow at the Brain and Mind Centre, University of Sydney, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. He specializes in lipid biochemistry, mental health, and neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on Alzheimer’s and Schizophrenia. He holds a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics from UNSW Sydney (2012) and completed postdoctoral research at Prince of Wales Clinical School investigating lipid imbalances in Alzheimer’s. His research has been supported by a prestigious NHMRC-ARC Dementia Fellowship (2015).
His work explores sphingolipid metabolism’s role in neurodegeneration, antipsychotic effects, and cannabinoid impacts on mental health. Key contributions include discoveries about Sphingosine 1-phosphate depletion in Alzheimer’s and lipidomic biomarkers for schizophrenia. He collaborates with the Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation and has published in Nature Communications, Neurobiology of Aging, and Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
- Education:
- Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours), UNSW Sydney (2008)
- PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, UNSW Sydney (2012)
Research interests span lipid signaling in neurological disorders, endocannabinoid systems, and translational biomarkers. Recent studies investigate cannabinoid effects on schizophrenia patients and antipsychotic-induced lipid changes. His work bridges basic science and clinical applications, aiming to improve diagnostics and therapies for mental health and neurodegenerative conditions.
Grants include funding for lipidomic biomarker research in schizophrenia (2023) and Alzheimer’s-related metabolic studies (2020). He leads projects analyzing sphingolipid pathways in aging and disease progression.
He is affiliated with the Molecular Precision Mental Health initiative, advancing precision medicine through lipidomic profiling.
