Professor William Griffiths is Chair of Mass Spectrometry at Swansea University Medical School, leading the Oxysterol Research Group. His research focuses on cholesterol biosynthesis, lipidomics, and neurodegenerative diseases, utilizing advanced mass spectrometry techniques. He holds editorial roles in Journal of Lipid Research and Clinical Mass Spectrometry.
- Education: BSc/PhD in Chemistry from University College Cardiff; postdoctoral training at Karolinska Institute.
- Previous institutions: University of the West Indies, Karolinska Institute, University of London.
Research interests include bile acid pathways, neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s), and immune system interactions with lipid metabolism. Over 250 publications and 7,000+ citations, with two edited books on lipidomics.
Teaching: Undergraduate/postgraduate courses in lipid biochemistry and biomedical mass spectrometry. Member of BBSRC-funded South West Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership.
Collaborations span neurology, immunology, and metabolic disorder studies, with projects on oxysterol imaging in brain tissue and biomarker discovery.
