Prof. Dr. Marko Hekkert is a full professor of Dynamics of Innovation Systems at Utrecht University’s Faculty of Geosciences, affiliated with the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development and the Innovation Studies Group. He focuses on the dynamics of emerging technological fields contributing to sustainable societal transitions, including energy, circular economy, and agriculture.

- Member of the supervisory board of TNO and chair of Green Minds
- Developed the Technological Innovation System framework and co-created the Mission-Oriented Innovation System framework
His research emphasizes micro-mechanisms like power, strategy, and resource allocation in innovation systems. He supervises 10 active PhD students and has guided 20 to completion. A prolific advisor, he contributes to national and international policy via roles at PBL, TNO, Rathenau Institute, and the Socio-Economic Council. His work integrates Future Food Utrecht and Pathways to Sustainability initiatives.
Marko’s 2007 article, Functions of Innovation Systems, remains highly cited (>2500 in Google Scholar). He actively engages in translating academic knowledge to practice through keynote speeches, policy workshops, and training programs for Dutch civil servants.
