Rob Raven is a full professor at Utrecht University, affiliated with the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development and the Innovation Studies department. His work focuses on sustainability transitions, socio-technical innovation, and urban transformations through socio-technical experimentation and institutional change.

Raven’s research explores how cities evolve through eco-city and smart-city initiatives. He specializes in multi-level theories of transformative change, socio-technical experimentation, and governance models like strategic niche management. His empirical studies span energy and mobility transitions in Europe and Asia. Current projects include NATURVATION (Horizon2020) and analyses of smart urbanism.
He contributes to transdisciplinary approaches, emphasizing governance, business models, and participatory frameworks for nature-based solutions in urban re-naturing. His work bridges systemic innovation with policy analysis, particularly in low-carbon transitions and regional-European governance nexuses.
