Rob Raven is a Professor of sustainability transitions and deputy director (research) at Monash Sustainable Development Institute, Monash University. He also holds a visiting professor position at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University. With a background originally in electrical engineering, Raven has established himself as a leading interdisciplinary scholar in sustainability transitions research.
Raven's research interests center on understanding the dynamics and governance of sustainability transitions and socio-technical innovation. His work has made major contributions to multi-level theories of transformative change, socio-technical experimentation, and strategic niche management. His empirical research spans urban, energy, and mobility transition processes across Europe, Asia, and Australia. Key research areas include transformative change in urban contexts such as smart, sustainable, and net-zero cities and precincts, with a focus on how actors, place-based experimentation, institutional change, and incumbency in socio-technical regimes shape sustainable city futures.
Analysis of Raven's recent publications reveals a strong focus on practical applications of transition theory, particularly in urban contexts. His work increasingly examines household-level sustainability practices, circular economy transitions, and the governance challenges of implementing net-zero strategies at precinct scale. There's a clear trend toward interdisciplinary collaboration and policy-relevant research addressing the urgent climate challenges facing cities worldwide.

He has co-hosted major international conferences including the 13th International Sustainability Transitions conference.
Raven actively contributes to research networks and living labs that bridge academic research with practical sustainability transitions. His work with University Living Labs demonstrates his commitment to creating spaces where theory meets practice in sustainability transformations. He serves on editorial boards for key journals including Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions, Global Sustainability, and Nature Urban Sustainability, helping shape the direction of sustainability transitions research globally.
