Mark Lycett is an Adjunct Professor and Director of the South Asia Center at the University of Pennsylvania. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico (1995). His research focuses on archaeology, historical anthropology, and historical ecology, with regional expertise in South Asia, Latin America, and North America. Key themes include colonialism’s environmental impacts, demographic patterns, and the interplay between human societies and ecosystems.
His work bridges disciplinary boundaries, examining material culture, landscape ecology, and biodiversity conservation. Notable publications analyze megalithic sites in Karnataka, forest management in colonial India, and the historical ecology of Spanish missions in New Mexico. Lycett also investigates socio-political transformations in South India, such as the Vijayanagara Empire’s decline.
As Director of the South Asia Center, he oversees interdisciplinary research initiatives and cultural heritage projects. His research emphasizes methodological innovation and the integration of anthropological theory with archaeological practice.
