Mark Hauser is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Northwestern University, specializing in historical archaeology. He received his PhD from Syracuse University in 2001. His research investigates slavery, colonialism, and environmental interactions across the Caribbean and South India/Indian Ocean regions using methods like GIS, archaeological survey, and compositional analysis.
His work explores material cultures of slavery, informal economies, colonial ecologies, and the movement of people/ideas between oceans. Key themes include mapping alternative geographies of the 18th-19th century world, water management under colonialism, and comparative studies of plantation systems.
Recent publications focus on Dominica's ecological legacies, South Indian agricultural landscapes, and transoceanic colonial networks. Trends show consistent emphasis on spatial analysis, environmental constraints in slave societies, and cross-cultural encounters in the Global South.
