Dr Mark Crabtree is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Biosciences (Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences) at the University of Surrey. He holds a BSc from the University of Surrey, a PhD from Weill Medical College of Cornell University (New York, USA), and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford. His work focuses on NO-Redox balance in cardiovascular disease, exploring interactions between nitric oxide (NO), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in cellular signaling and disease mechanisms.
- Education:
- BSc, University of Surrey
- PhD, Weill Medical College of Cornell University
- Postdoctoral Research, University of Oxford (2006–2022)
His research investigates how imbalances in NO-Redox pathways contribute to cardiovascular disorders, including endothelial dysfunction and ischemia-reperfusion injury. He returned to Surrey in 2022 after holding prestigious fellowships, including the British Heart Foundation Intermediate Fellowship. Dr. Crabtree teaches advanced courses in biochemistry and pharmacology, emphasizing receptor biology, energy metabolism, and scientific communication.
Key contributions include studies on tetrahydrobiopterin’s role in myocardial function and ischemic injury. His awards include the Oxford Centre of Research Excellence Fellowship (2012–2014) and British Heart Foundation Intermediate Fellowship (2015–2021).
As a supervisor, he mentors PhD students like Priyanka Patel and oversees BSc/MSc projects. His work aligns with interdisciplinary teams, including collaborations with the Target Discovery Institute and Department of Chemistry at Oxford.
