Mario Truu is a Junior Lecturer in Criminal Law at the University of Tartu's Faculty of Social Sciences School of Law (0.50 FTE as of 2024). He concurrently serves as a Judge at the Tartu Circuit Court of Appeal (1.00 FTE since 2024). Previously held roles include Legal Advisor to the Criminal Chamber of the Estonian Supreme Court (2020–2024), and Assistant/Adjunct Instructor at the University of Tartu School of Law (2016–2020).
Education: PhD Candidate in Law (University of Tartu, ongoing since 2019), Master of Laws (cum laude, 2016), Bachelor of Social Sciences (Law, 2013). Completed specialized training including The Salzburg Law School Summer Course on International Criminal Law (2017).
Research focuses on criminal law principles, European Union criminal law, legal definiteness (nullum crimen principle), and judicial interpretation. Active in legal education and professional organizations including the Estonian Academic Law Society (Board Member since 2024) and Program Management Board of the School of Law (since 2021).
Awarded 'Faculty of Law Teacher of the Year' at University of Tartu in 2020 and 2021. Recognized for contributions to legal education and scholarship. Engaged in projects like methodology development for Estonian Bar exams and legal commentary on constitutional provisions.
