Dr. Marie McIlroy is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). She co-leads the Androgens in Health and Disease working group and serves as Scientific Lead for the Endocrine-Related Cancer Program at the Beaumont RCSI Cancer Centre. She holds roles as Honorary Secretary of the Irish Association of Cancer Research (2025–2027) and on the Scientific Committee of the British Endocrine Society. As Co-Director of the Undergraduate Medical Program (Year 1), she emphasizes medical education and mentors students in the International Citizenship Program.
Her research focuses on androgen-driven mechanisms in breast cancer development and endocrine therapy resistance, leveraging 3D humanized models, mass-spectrometry, and proteogenomic analysis. Key interests include steroid signaling, cancer cell adaptation to altered hormonal states, and translational approaches for personalized therapy.
Dr. McIlroy has secured grants from bodies like the Irish Endocrine Society, Beaumont Hospital Cancer Research Trust, and the Health Research Board. Her teaching spans courses in Biomedicine, Molecular Medicine, and Pharmacology. She actively supervises PhD students in endocrine cancer research and has mentored award-winning scholars such as Azlena Ali and Laura Creevey.
Her work impacts clinical practice through innovations like 3D bioprinted cancer models and collaborations on drug screening. Notable contributions include patent applications and organizing interdisciplinary symposiums on sex steroids in health and disease.
