Mariana P. Candido is the Winship Distinguished Research Professor of History (2023-2026) and Professor of History at Emory University. She holds a PhD in African History from York University (2006), an MA in African Studies from El Colegio de Mexico (2000), and a BA in History from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1997). Her research focuses on West Central Africa, the transatlantic slave trade, and gendered experiences of slavery. She has held fellowships at the American Academy in Berlin (Fall 2023) and the Institute for Advanced Study (Spring 2024).

Her research examines slavery's impact on Angolan society, emphasizing women's agency in political and economic spheres. She co-edits *African Economic History* and contributes to the *Encyclopedia of Slavery, Slave Trade, and the Diaspora*.
Her teaching covers African and Atlantic history, with courses on slavery, abolition, and women’s history. Current advisees include doctoral students focused on African diaspora themes.
