His research explores the interconnected histories of Africa, Brazil, and the Atlantic world, emphasizing trans-imperial networks and global economic systems. Current projects include studies of West African kingdoms (Dahomey/Whydah) and a global history of the Indian Textile trade, integrating Portuguese colonial possessions across Africa, Asia, and Brazil.
His work has been supported by the ACLS, NEH, and the Gulbenkian and CNPQ foundations. He is the author of *Cross-Cultural Exchange in the Atlantic World* (Cambridge, 2012) and a forthcoming book on Central Africa's abolition era (Princeton).
Ferreira’s research bridges socio-cultural and economic history, emphasizing how marginalized groups navigated imperial systems. Ongoing projects investigate Brazil-Africa linkages and the Carreira da India trade’s role in early modern globalization.
