Dr Lloyd Belton is a Research Fellow in History at the University of Glasgow, supported by a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship (2022–2025). His research focuses on the role of West African mariners in Atlantic abolitionism, the slave trade, and imperial expansion, with a focus on the 18th and 19th centuries. He holds a PhD from the University of Leeds, an MA/MSc in International and World History from Columbia University and the London School of Economics, and a BA in History from the University of Melbourne.
Belton’s research interests span slavery, abolitionism, and imperial history, with a particular emphasis on transnational dynamics and the agency of marginalized groups. His current project examines how West African mariners influenced abolitionist movements, piracy, and the growth of European/American empires in the Caribbean and West Africa.
His publications explore themes such as the illegal US-Brazil slave trade, inter-American abolitionist networks, and the biography of figures like Emiliano F.B. Mundrucu. These works highlight transnational linkages and the interconnectedness of abolitionist struggles across the Americas.
Belton has received the British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship, supporting his investigation into Atlantic history and slavery. His research bridges historical analysis with contemporary discussions about trafficking and global human rights, reflecting a commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship.
