James H. Sweet is the Vilas-Jartz Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on Africans and their descendants in the Atlantic world, with specialties in comparative slavery, race and nation, and the histories of Brazil and South Africa. He served as President of the American Historical Association (AHA) in 2023.
Education: Ph.D. (CUNY Graduate Center), M.A. and B.A. (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill).
Research interests include the social and cultural histories of Africans in the Atlantic world, the international dimensions of U.S. slavery, and South African studies. His prize-winning books include Recreating Africa (2003) and Domingos Álvares (2011), with a forthcoming 2025 study on mutiny and slavery in the Revolutionary Atlantic. His courses cover world history, Brazil, South Africa, and the African diaspora.
Advising includes work with students Celia Crifasi Ebenezer and Kwaku Danquah. His work bridges historiography, cultural analysis, and transnational frameworks.
