Dr. Daniel Domingues da Silva is an Associate Professor of History at Rice University and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Center for African and African American Studies. He holds a Ph.D. from Emory University and specializes in African and African Diaspora history, with a focus on slavery and abolition. His work has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Mellon Foundation, and others. He is the host of SlaveVoyages.org, a renowned digital resource, and serves as Bibliographer for Slavery: An Annual Bibliographical Supplement.
His research explores mechanisms of enslavement in Atlantic Africa, the transatlantic slave trade’s inland origins, and post-abolition legacies. Notable works include The Atlantic Slave Trade from West Central Africa, 1780-1867 (Cambridge, 2017) and articles on Mozambican abolition, intra-American slave trafficking, and the African diaspora in Latin America. He received the 2017 Teaching with Primary Sources Award for his course ‘Fighting the Atlantic Slave Trade.’
Dr. Domingues da Silva collaborates on digital projects like African Origins Portal and Visualizing Abolition, emphasizing public engagement with historical data. His teaching spans early African history, modern Africa, and museum-oriented courses.
